How to touch on and off?

If you’re using a myki card, touch your myki to the centre of the reader. Hold still and listen for the beep. A green light shows on the reader when you’ve successfully touched on or off.

If you’re using a smartphone with a Mobile myki, wake up your phone and hover it about 1cm above the reader. Hold still and listen for the beep. A green light shows on the reader, and a tick will appear on your phone screen when you’ve successfully touched on or off.

Trains

  • Touch on before getting on the train and touch off when you exit the station. If you’re changing trains at a station you don’t need to touch off and on again, unless transferring through a myki barrier gate.

Buses

  • Remember to touch on and off.
  • If you use myki Money and don’t touch off, you’ll be charged a default 2-hour fare for metropolitan Melbourne.

Trams

  • If you’re travelling in Zone 1+2, remember to touch on. You don’t need to touch off.
  • If you’re just travelling in the city’s Free Tram Zone, don’t touch on or off.
  • If you’re just travelling in Zone 2, touch on and off for a cheaper fare.

Fares

The fare you pay is determined by:

  • Where you travel, including the zones you travel through if you’re using myki
  • Your ticket type, for example, a 2 hour or daily ticket
  • Whether you’re eligible for a concession fare or free travel
  • any other discounts.

Myki Card Types

Full Fare ($6 for myki card)

  • Adults aged 19 and over with no concession entitlement
  • International visitors aged 19 and over.

Concession ($3 for myki card)

  • Cardholders of a Victorian Health Care Card, Australian Pensioner Concession Card or PTV ID (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary or Asylum Seeker)
  • Seniors from other states in Australia.

Child ($3 for myki card)

  • Children aged five to 18 (including children from other states and international visitors)
  • Children aged four and under travel free and don’t need a myki.

Senior ($3 for myki card)

  • Victorian Seniors Card holders (seniors receive a free myki with their Victorian Seniors Card)
  • Seniors from other states in Australia need to buy a Concession myki.
